Tracking Assets Labor and Products with RTLS

1. What is RTLS?

Josh Peck:
RTLS is Raymond’s Real-Time Location System which uses Operational Optimization through tracking zoning. Through accurate (+/- 3 feet) geofencing, zoning, and tracking capabilities, iWarehouse Real-Time Location System (iW.RTLS) can optimize your processes and reduce operational costs.

"Understanding where and how things are moving through your warehouse. That's where Raymond's Real-Time Location System (RTLS) comes into play. It's a tracking, locating, and monitoring system that allows you to restrict and control the movements of the trucks within user defined zones.”

2. What’s the difference between using wi-fi and wi-fi triangulation versus ultra-wideband?

Josh Peck:
“Most people already have wi-fi in their buildings and it’s able to provide accuracy but that could be anywhere between 30-50ft away. When trying to understand where devices are and what precise access point they’re connected to, those devices like the stay connected to one access point as long as they can so they’re not losing any data packets. Additionally, ultra-wideband allows for much more precise locationing because it’s not reliant upon other devices slowing down that traffic or assuming bandwidth. It can also pull the locations multiple times per second that way you can get down to one meter accuracy that is just not offered in wi-fi tracking."

3. How does RTLS fit in with all the other intralogistics solutions Raymond has to offer?

Josh Peck:
“There's a lot of different core components that are associated with our intralogistics solutions. That allows our customers to pick what they need to satisfy the application and what solution they're looking for. When you're talking about the location data it can tell you a lot about where the truck is in any given point in the operation, if you marry that up with something like telematics, we can start capturing data about the operators; what they're using, or in the event they have any impacts, you can start identifying areas of trouble in your facility precisely and it could be across all of your fleet."

4. If there is a certain area where a warehouse is having trouble maneuvering, how could RTLS help in that situation?

Josh Peck:
If you put a keep in keep out zone right there it'll force the truck to stop and then the operator has to drive one mile an hour through that area until they clear the zone retake the handle and then they can resume normal operation."

Jason Fiume:

“The additional component with RTLS is with that movement monitoring. We can control speeds and truck behavior within given zones as well to make sure that if there's an expected stop zone or “keep in, keep out” zone within your warehouse that we can make sure that the truck responds accordingly and we're protecting both our equipment and our people”

5. How does a warehouse customer use RTLS to improve operations?

Josh Peck:
Operations managers can make sure their material handling equipment is actually moving. They’ll want to monitor things like idle time or how far they’ve traveled. You can get things like reports based on idle time per hour, that tells you on an hour to hours basis what percentage of time your trucks were idle. You can also do something like combine this with telematics, not only can you see if it was idle, but you can also determine who was logged into it. This will help you work with those operators to determine “hey is there anything getting in your way from doing your job”. What can we help you to do better? It's not always just to look at the operator understanding what they're doing, we really want to assist people in doing their jobs.

“Most importantly you've got that bird's eye view of where those trucks are going within your warehouse. If you have passive congestion or high traffic areas we're able to identify that to help you create optimization of routes, processes, WMS transactions, to really start understanding the best flow of material through your warehouse."

"That high traffic component really allows us to identify potential misplaced products and reduces unproductive hours by some idle time that we have or unnecessary inactivity time that we're seeing through that RTLS component.”

“When it comes to cost, we have our iTRACK fleet and asset management system. Essentially that allows us to provide service dispatch, acceptance, performance service and we can document all of that within the same portal as we do our other telematics solutions to really understand the cost of operating our equipment right. We can track and measure usage to cost to really get that cost per hour analysis for you.”

6. Do you need to have the iWarehouse telematics system throughout your fleet in order to implement RTLS?

Josh Peck:
Well, you can use RTLS without iWarehouse and certainly it'll work. However, there's a lot more benefits by bringing those two pieces together. First, it allows you to alert the operator as to what's going on or if they're in any type of zone. Then, also, it really gives you just another data point to where you can understand your truck usage, your operator usage, and really marry up the precise location for key events that iWarehouse provides such as, any impacts, failed checklists, anything.

7. How can RTLS work better for customers today given the Covid-19 situation we find ourselves in?

Josh Peck:
“I think we all know that how we work has radically changed since April. With our partner we've pivoted, and we've developed a badge now that not only will provide the XY positioning to a server alerts and still provide alerts based upon its position to zone these badges will actually alert when they get too close to each other. These badges come programmed to alert someone when they get within six feet of another person. That record could be captured to understand all of the different events throughout that day, who the people came into contact with. It really helps our work and it really helps the associates that have to be on site to remember they have to stay apart from each other. How we do work has fundamentally changed so this solution will help remind them that they need to stay apart."

8. Do I have to outfit my entire warehouse, every person, every truck, throughout the warehouse with a badge or can I start out smaller?

Josh Peck:
“You can certainly outfit your entire operation; it gives you the whole picture of what's going on. But, at the same time we recognize there may only be certain areas that the customer wants to look at and this is a scalable solution. We can get an application engineer on site and determine what that coverage area is going to be and set it up specifically to your application. Additionally, with those badges in terms of alerting when they come too close to each other that doesn't even require infrastructure, all that requires is a charged-up badge."
